#InTheNews: Oxford Gets Hip

Words by Miss Krissy

Now if this ain’t some sh*t!

Miley starts “twerking” and it makes its way into the Oxford Dictionary. What is the world coming to? Is Miley that big of a deal or has society finally reached it’s literary tipping point? You be the judge…

Pronunciation: /twəːk/
A verb.

According to Oxford, the definition reads:

“Informal dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.”

In addition to ‘twerk,’ other commonly used words like “selfie,” “emoji,” and “srsly” have also been added to the Oxford Dictionary. The social media age has officially taken over and now folks — young and old alike — can pick up a dictionary and get the “proper” meanings to these terms.

For illustrative purposes, imagine helping your child on his or her next book report and coming across a sentence that reads:

“Sally twerked in front of the full-length mirror and paused to take a selfie. She srsly wanted Joey to like her status update, so she also sent him a smiley face emoji.”

As much as you may frown in contextual disgust, it will be perfectly correct.

You might as well be on the look out for “bruh” to make its way to a page near you in the not-so-far-off future.
