#InTheNews: McDonald’s Replaces Happy Meal Toys With Books & Gets Denounced By Critics

McDonald’s announced they will be offering reading books in their infamous “Happy Meals,” starting November 1, in support of National Family Literacy Day and continue the promotion of literacy through the 14th.

They will also be providing more than 20 million books to families in the U.S. And giving 100,000 additional books to the literacy non-profit Reading is Fundamental.

But not everyone is thrilled at this seemingly “good deed.” An advocacy group, Corporate Accountability International, is giving the billion dollar burger pushing company flack for trying to trick children and parents alike into thinking they actually care about their overall well-being.

Their take on this is, it’s simply McDonalds’ reaction to the ever growing pressure from parents and health professionals urging healthier eating for children. But books don’t address the epidemic of diet-related diseases. Good point CAI! I wonder if the books being provided will have anything to do with promoting healthy eating, while the innocent toddler happily munches on his cardboard cheeseburger that will take 2 weeks to digest. Ha!

But despite the negative commentators, Mickey D’s is already working on their 2015 Happy Meal Books Program. They’re even offering families an interactive digital book each month next year. The digital book will be available via their mobile app – McPlay, McDonald’s Happy Meal app.

Way to boost your goodie points Ronald McDonald. Guess you’re no clown after all.
