It may not come up in conversation often, but the Friday franchise is one of the most entertaining in Hollywood history.
Of course it lacks all the bells and whistles for mainstream praise, but to call the series a “cult classic” would not being doing justice to the genius creativity sprinkled throughout the kindred films.
Without being over-analytical or extra unnecessarily douchebaggerous, these 3 movies age as good as any so-called American classic. Strip away any urban reference in all three films and it’s simply a story about a guy trying to find his way in the world. Every movie ever made is about that in some way, shape, or form. That’s what makes these movies so relatable. And enjoyable. If you don’t own all 3 Friday movies, I question your so-called sense of humor. Which brings us to my point…
Of the 3, I’ve found myself equally drawn to Friday and Friday After Next over the years. There was a time when I would fist fight you for saying the first one wasn’t the best one, but I’ve begun to sway towards Next actually being the superior film. In terms of storytelling and plot, neither movie is cutting edge, but the over-the-top yet under-the-brow comedy still provides laughter after all these years. The characters are more colorful than the original, the writing is substantially more cohesive, and it’s obvious that Ice Cube had taken control of his vessel. As hard as it would be to do so, if I had to pick which movie I liked better, I’d be forced to say Friday After Next is a better movie than Friday.
And for the record, I think we all can agree that Next Friday sucked. It sucked then and even more so now. I watched it a couple weeks ago for nostalgic purposes and when I woke up, I knew I was done forever, but that’s neither here nor there.
